Unsightly, black streaking on roofs is caused primarily by a wind-borne roof algae (known as Gloeocapsa Magma) and can be safely removed with minimal impact on the roof shingles. WOOD SHINGLED ROOFS:

Cleaning cedar shingle roofs provides a dramatic improvement in appearance.
